If you ignore era and weight classes, Fedor is absolutely, certainly the best heavyweight in the modern era. Because of weight classes, and awful record keeping before the sport became legit, he does have a couple of VERY close runners for the title of 'the best of all time' though. :)For example, before Fedor was born, there was Masahiko Kimura. The number of Vale Tudo matches he fought isn't clear, but he was undefeated (in addition to being a multiple time Judo champion and martial arts teacher to police forces in Japan) in MMA and had key wins over the early legends of the sport, HÃ©lio Gracie and Valdemar Santana. The 'Kimura' used to be called the reverse ude-garami before the Gracie fight. :)In the modern era, we have the undefeated Lyoto Machida in the Light Heavyweight division. He's a beast. He doesn't always finish fights like Fedor, but he simply doesn't lose them... and often makes his opponents look like children in the process. Sokoudjou, Franklin, Penn, Ortiz, Rua, and young guns like Bonnar, Silva, and Evans... all fell to Machida. A different style, a different set of opponents of course... but he's young, strong, and still has plenty of time to build on his legend. 16-0-0. No losses. No 'no contest's. Just perfection against a who's who of modern MMA.Just food for thought.
